Rogie Falls, Garve

Rogie Falls is a short, spectacular waterfall walk near Contin, where the Black Water river tumbles through a rocky gorge — best known for its dramatic Victorian-style suspension bridge suspended directly above the cascade, and for salmon leaping the falls on their journey upstream to spawn.

The route starts from the Rogie Falls car park off the A835, with seasonal toilets on site. From the car park, a waymarked path (avoiding the wooden shelter near the toilets) heads gently downhill through pine and silver birch, following blue and yellow markers through a mix of forest and boulder-strewn ground. The path meanders down to the riverbank, following it downstream towards the falls, with a viewing platform and information boards giving a first close look at the cascading water.

Continuing down to the suspension bridge itself gives the finest view of all — the bridge sways gently as the Black Water crashes beneath it. On the far side, a man-made fish ladder, built alongside the hydro power scheme, allows salmon and other fish to bypass the main falls when river levels are kept artificially low; between June and October, with luck, salmon can be seen attempting to leap either the main cascade or the ladder itself. For a longer circuit, paths continue on the far side of the bridge, climbing to the Raven's Crag viewpoint for a different perspective on the falls before looping back to the car park.

This is an easy, family-friendly walk on well-maintained gravel paths, suitable for most visitors including some wheelchair users on the direct route, though sections can become muddy after rain and there are a few short, steeper stretches.

Parking at Rogie Falls is chargeable (managed by Highland Council); a bus service (961, Inverness to Ullapool) passes nearby.

Trail Safety
  • Check the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) or a local forecast before setting out.
  • Carry a map and compass (or GPS) — phone signal is unreliable or absent across much of the Highlands.
  • Pack waterproofs, spare layers, food, and water, even for a short walk — conditions can change quickly.
  • Wear sturdy, appropriate footwear for the terrain and season.
  • Tell someone your planned route and expected return time before you leave.
  • If you get into difficulty, dial 999 (or 112) and ask for Police → Mountain Rescue.
