Easy · Tain
The Tain Hill Walk is a short, easy climb through mixed pine woodland above Scotland's oldest Royal Burgh, following clear waymarked paths past the remains of an old quarry to open views over the Cromarty and Dornoch Firths.
The route starts from the Tain Hill Forest car park at the end of Jubilee Drive — those without a car can walk up from Tain itself, adding around 3 kilometres each way via Craighill Terrace and Jubilee Road. From the car park, a path marked by red posts climbs gently uphill, passing a picnic table before continuing between a fence and a dyke through pine woodland, with occasional open views appearing through the trees. As the woodland thins, older Scots pine takes over, and the path skirts around the remains of a long-disused quarry — this once provided the stone for many of Tain's finest buildings, including the historic Tolbooth.
Beyond the quarry, the track continues through alternating forest and more open ground before reaching a viewpoint above the old ruined croft of Quarryhill, with uninterrupted views stretching across the Dornoch Firth, the Sutherland coast and hills beyond, and much of the Tarbat Peninsula. A shorter return option continues downhill along the powerline, passing Japanese larches planted for autumn colour, before turning left back along the forest road to the car park — a round trip of around one and a half miles; a longer circuit of roughly four miles continues further over the hill before rejoining the forest road.
This is a gentle, well-graded walk suitable for most visitors, with clear waymarked paths throughout and no technical difficulties.
Parking at Tain Hill Forest is free; the nearest bus and train services are in Tain, around 3 kilometres from the start.
