Did you feel it?
A small 2.5 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Lochaber around 4:00 AM, waking up residents in Fort William, Spean Bridge, Roybridge, and Inverlair. People reported hearing a deep rumble for about five seconds, with a few describing it as a mini underground explosion followed by a slight tremor.
Quakes like this don't happen often in Scotland, but they aren't unheard of—a 1.0 quake was detected near Falkirk recently, along with a 2.3 tremor in Lochcarron. In fact, Scotland hosted the UK's strongest onshore earthquakes last October, when twin quakes near Loch Lyon were felt over 37 miles away!
