Beinn a' Chreachain, at 1,081 metres, is the highest of the five Bridge of Orchy Munros, its summit reached beyond neighbouring Beinn Achaladair via the minor top of Meall Buidhe, with fine views down to Glen Lyon and Beinn Heasgarnich.
Reached from Beinn Achaladair, the route descends the steep, occasionally slippery southern slopes past impressive cliffs to a bealach, then climbs Meall Buidhe before a further descent and a pleasant final walk up to Beinn a' Chreachain's summit — the high point of the day, with striking views back to Beinn Achaladair and, on the descent, an early glimpse of the picturesque Lochan a' Chreachain glinting below.
The return from Beinn a' Chreachain is a long one: a path descends past the lochan and eventually reaches a good track leading back to Achallader Farm, though there can be issues with river crossings in spate conditions, for which an alternative route exists. Regular visitors emphasise that reaching Beinn a' Chreachain commits walkers to a substantial walk back, since the peak sits some distance from the standard Achallader starting point.
The circuit taking in Beinn Achaladair and Beinn a' Chreachain from Achallader is around 20 kilometres with substantial ascent, typically seven to nine hours; for the exceptionally fit with transport arranged, the day can be extended further west to Beinn an Dòthaidh and Beinn Dòrain, descending to Bridge of Orchy instead.
The long return leg past Lochan a' Chreachain crosses remote ground with river crossings that demand attention in wet conditions — this is a genuinely long day even before accounting for the walk back, and full navigation and stamina are both required.
The Achallader Farm car park is free (donations welcome); there is no public transport directly to the start, though Bridge of Orchy station is a walkable distance for those without a car.
