Sgùrr a' Mhadaidh

Sgùrr a' Mhadaidh, at 918 metres, is a multi-topped peak on Skye's Cuillin Ridge, its four summits linked by a complex, serious scramble that forms one of the more intricate route-finding challenges of the whole traverse.

Reached from Sgùrr a' Ghreadaidh as part of a wider Cuillin traverse from Glen Brittle, the connecting ridge continues south with sustained, exposed scrambling throughout — the terrain here demands full concentration, with several minor summits and notches requiring careful navigation to find the correct line through increasingly complex rock architecture. The mountain's various tops offer differing perspectives on the surrounding ridge and down into Coire a' Ghreadaidh to the west and Coir' a' Mhadaidh to the east.

An alternative, considerably more direct approach for those tackling this Munro in relative isolation ascends via Coire a' Ghreadaidh from Glen Brittle, following the same initial approach used for Sgùrr na Banachdaich and Sgùrr a' Ghreadaidh before a rising traverse gains the ridge closer to Sgùrr a' Mhadaidh's tops directly — though even this shorter approach involves genuine scrambling on the upper mountain, and finding the correct line among the various summits and notches requires confident route-finding.

From the ridge, the traverse can continue south towards Bidein Druim nan Ramh and the Munro Tops beyond for those undertaking the full Cuillin Ridge traverse, or descend via one of the corries on either side for a shorter round.

The round trip from Glen Brittle, whether via the full ridge traverse or the more direct corrie approach, is typically eight to ten hours or more given the technical nature of the terrain throughout.

This is serious, sustained Grade 2-3 scrambling with several summits and notches to navigate correctly — full scrambling competence and a confident head for heights are essential, and the complex, multi-topped nature of this peak makes navigation genuinely challenging even for experienced Cuillin visitors.

Parking at Glen Brittle is free; there is no public transport to the start.

Mountain Safety
  • Check the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) forecast before you set out, and be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate.
  • Carry a map and compass (or GPS) and know how to use them — don't rely on a phone signal, which is unreliable or absent across most of the Highlands.
  • Pack full waterproofs, spare warm layers, food, water, and a head torch, even on a forecast-clear day — mountain weather changes fast.
  • Wear proper hillwalking boots with ankle support and a good grip; trainers are not suitable for rough or wet terrain.
  • Tell someone your planned route and expected return time before you leave.
  • In winter conditions, an ice axe, crampons, and the skills to use them safely are essential on any Munro.
  • If you get into difficulty, dial 999 (or 112) and ask for Police → Mountain Rescue.
