936m · Cairngorms
A' Bhuidheanach Bheag, at 936 metres — "the Little Yellow Place" — is a broad, domed summit on the spacious plateau east of the Drumochter Pass, lacking distinctive landforms but wild and desolate in character, sharing the same access as neighbouring Càrn na Caim.
The route starts from layby 87 on the A9, crossing the road and following a vehicle track through planted forest, climbing steadily onto the plateau near an old quartz quarry. Continuing south, the path crosses a shallow, boggy depression — genuinely wet underfoot unless frozen — before an easy slope leads towards the summit trig point, reached via a col between the minor humps of A' Bhuidheanach Mòr and A' Bhuidheanach Bheag. Truly dedicated Munro-baggers may notice on the map a second summit of identical height around 500 metres to the west; it's impossible to say definitively which is the true high point, though this second contender lacks any cairn and receives far fewer visitors.
The return typically retraces the outward route, though a more circular option exists via Fuar Mhonadh from Dalnaspidal Lodge to the south, following a line of grouse butts for part of the way — a useful variation for those wanting to avoid backtracking the full distance.
Combined with Càrn na Caim, the round trip is around 19 kilometres, typically five to six hours; experienced hillwalkers often recommend saving this pair for winter conditions, when snow transforms these otherwise broad, featureless plateau mountains into something genuinely atmospheric and beautiful.
The vast plateau demands careful navigation in poor visibility, with peat hags and boggy ground that can disorientate even in relatively good conditions — lines of fence posts provide welcome navigational aid between the two summits, but full route-finding skills remain essential given the featureless nature of this high moorland.
The A9 layby is free; Dalwhinnie has both rail and bus connections nearby, within reasonable walking distance via the adjacent cycle path.
