DAY 1: The Wild West Coast & Loch Carron

Morning | Journey through the North Highlands to Loch Carron

  • Set off from Inverness and embark on Scotland's ‘Route 66,’ a journey through some of the country's most breathtaking landscapes. We'll start our day early, traveling through gently rolling farmlands before transitioning into the dramatic terrain of the northern Highlands and Loch Carron. As the scenery becomes more remote and rugged, you'll find yourself captivated by the unspoiled beauty of the Highlands—a place where time seems to stand still.

Mid-Morning | Bealach na Bà and Applecross

  • Prepare for a thrilling drive along Bealach na Bà, one of Scotland's highest and most dramatic roads. This exhilarating route takes us to the remote village of Applecross, which still retains the charm of traditional Highland life (with some residents still speaking Gaelic). Grab some refreshments at the popular Applecross Inn before we continue our adventure.

Afternoon | Shieldaig, Beinn Eighe Reserve & Corrieshalloch Gorge

  • Next, we journey to the charming village of Shieldaig for lunch—be sure to sample some fresh local seafood! Afterward, we pass through the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve and visit one of the NC500's hidden gems: the pristine sands of Gairloch Beach. Lastly, we explore Corrieshalloch Gorge, where a short forest walk leads to a dramatic, cascading view of nature's power.

Early Evening | Free Time in Ullapool

  • We conclude the day with a scenic drive to Ullapool, passing through untouched moorlands en route to the shores of Loch Broom. Enjoy a well-deserved rest among the charming, whitewashed cottages of this delightful fishing village, go stargazing, or catch a live music session in a local pub.

Accommodation: Your overnight accommodation will be in Ullapool.

Morning | Journey to Assynt

  • Get ready for another exciting day of adventure along the North Coast 500. We leave Ullapool and head into the far northwest Highlands, where the raw, untamed wilderness of the Assynt mountains awaits.

Mid-Morning | Ardvreck Castle & Kylesku Bridge

  • Step into history with a visit to the 15th-century Ardvreck Castle, a haunting ruin perched on the shores of Loch Assynt steeped in tales of clan betrayal. Next, we turn to a marvel of modern engineering with a scenic drive over the striking Kylesku Bridge before continuing north to Durness.

Afternoon | Exploring the Edge of the North Coast

  • It's time for fresh sea air at Balnakeil Beach, where you can walk along vast white sands and rolling dunes. Next, we explore Smoo Cave—an awe-inspiring, mystical sea cave steeped in legends of pirates. The rest of the afternoon is flexible based on the weather and group interests; we'll stop for lunch in a Highland village and take in stunning landscapes before arriving in Thurso.

Early Evening | Free Time in Thurso

  • Enjoy a free evening in this northern coastal town at your own pace. Take a peaceful stroll along its beautiful beach, or explore the local streets to find a cosy restaurant for a relaxing dinner.
